When I have a bigger yard (how many gardeners wistfully start sentences with that phrase?) I am definitely going to use live Christmas trees for my holiday decorating. At least once in a while. I think it's wonderful to use them to mark special Christmases, such as a baby's first, or the first year in a new home.
Because the whole point of having a live Christmas tree is to eventually plant the tree outside, it's important to keep a live tree as healthy as possible during the holiday season. About.com Forestry Guide Steve Nix states that he recommends keeping a live Christmas tree indoors for no longer than seven to ten days, and that some experts recommend as few as four days.
Steve has a very informative article on his site about caring for a live Christmas tree, including tips about how to acclimate it to indoor conditions, keep it from losing too much moisture, and how to water. It is definitely worth checking out!
